You book arrived yesterday. Lovely. You write very well, and I found myself laughing at some and near tears at other points. Very well done, including the pictures and short sketches.

Beautiful, heartfelt stories!
I really enjoyed learning about the Lumbee tribe of North Carolina. The rest of the world can really learn something from them. They are the epitomy of what a community should be, full of love for one another, supporting each other through good times and bad, always remembering where they are from even though they are miles and miles away. Jojo tells hers and her family's story so well and readers are able to feel her emotions through her words. Really beautiful stories about a beautiful people who should never be forgotten. Thank you for allowing me to experience your story.
Just read A Lumbee Gershom, and I must say, this is one of the BEST reads I have had the opportunity to soak into my brain and soul! I was right there, with every breath, and feeling Miss Anita " Jojo " Shifflett was speaking of throughout this book. I must admit, that I have met her only on a few occasions, so I can hear her words, her voice, as comforting and inviting as it is, just as A Lumbee Gershom is. I CANNOT wait until another book from her is published! Please, Miss Jojo, get to it, so I can re-read another book. First time in my life, I have read a book only days after reading it, so I can relive those memories with her again!

IF YOU WANT TO HEAR AND THINK ABOUT REAL LIFE PEOPLE FROM AN AMERIcan inDIAN NATION, CALLED THE LUMBEE, WHICH HAS BEEN DENIED ITS VERY OWN IDENTITY FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY AS EVEN BEING INDIANS OF AMERICA, YET WHO IS KNOWN TO HAVE FIERCELY FOUGHT THE ACCULTURATION PROCESS AND PROUDLY PASSED ON THEIR HERITAGE FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION, GETTING RECOGNIZED AS INDIVIDUAL INDIANS THROUGH LEGAL PROCEDURE BUT DENIED RECOGNITION AS AN "OFFICIAL" INDIAN NATION TO THIS DAY, THROUGH EVERY DAY LIFE'S PEOPLE RECOLLECTION OF THEIR CHILDHOOD, GROWNUPS LIFE, FAMILY LIFE, EVERYDAY LIFE, WORKING LIFE AND STRUGGLING LIFE…
IF YOU WANT TO GO THROUGH THIS JOURNEY WITH A COMBINATION, A "HEART JUMP BOUQUET" TO PARAPHRASE THE LATE MR. JOHN TRUDELL (SANTEE DAKOTA), OF REALISM, DOWN TO EARTH WORDS, NO CUTE MELLOW POETRY BUT POETIC SUGGESTING, SOOTHING AND STRIKING, SYMPATHETIC AND UNCOMPROMISING ONES, MOREOVER HIGHLY EVOCATIVE IN SENSATIONS, FEELINGS, EMOTIONS AND CERTAINLY THOUGHT PROVOKING :
YOU MAY WANT TO READ "A LUMBEE GERSHOM" BY ANITA JOJO BROOKS SHIFFLET, A LUMBEE LADY FROM TUSCARORA BACKGROUND, WHO APPEARS TO BE, LEAST SAID, A QUITE TALENTED SPOKESWOMAN ABOUT HER PEOPLE.
THIS IS NOT A BOOK ABOUT "INDIANS", NOR EVEN MORE ABOUT WHAT NON-INDIANS FANTASIZE ABOUT INDIANS, WHETHER BEING A SUBLIMATING FANTASY OR A DEROGATORY ONE, THIS IS NOT A BOOK TO FIT ANY OF THESE CLICHÉ EXPECTATIONS, THIS IS MERELY AND BRILLIANTLY A BOOK ABOUT PEOPLE WHO ARE AMERIcan indiANS AND HAVE NEVER FORGOTTEN IT.

"I LOVED THIS BOOK. IT SHOWS THAT EVEN TODAY, NATIVE AMERICANS STILL STRUGGLE TO FIT INTO THE COUNTRY THEY INHABITED CENTURIES BEFORE THE WHITE MAN."

A Lumbee Gershom is a great read! I love mine. Thanks JoJo for inscribing my book!
I purchased a copy of A Lumbee Gershom - at Cynas Jewelry this past Saturday.
I would like to personally congratulate Mrs. JoJo on writing the most scholarly Indian ethnology of Our Indian people I have ever read.
It is a perfect description of the psyche of My People.
In my professional opinion it far surpasses all the other papers, books, articles and documentaries that have been written about My People.
I could not put it down before I finished reading it.
I look forward to her next 25 upcoming editions and works. -Dr Reginald Oxendine
